Vaughn Steinert, Tesoro’s quarterback of the night, led his team to a sweeping 42-7 against Cypress High School at the Homecoming game on Sept. 21. Touchdown after touchdown, cheers after cheers, Steinert, only a junior, used the grand support from the crowd to keep his team at their best from start to finish on this important night.
As game day neared, Steinert acknowledged that he was most looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd. Given that it was the Homecoming game, he was thrilled to have so many supportive fans cheering him and his team on during his debut.
To prepare for the game, Steinert emphasizes that he and his team “put a lot of time in on the field, weight room and classroom” to ensure they are prepared each week. Leading up to the first whistle, Steinert notes that what really gets him ready and hyped for the game is his pregame song “Smile” by Uncle Cracker.
Although there were many major plays, Steinert recalls that his proudest moment was when he threw his first touchdown, claiming that “it really showed that as a team, we can go score and win this game.” Steinert further adds that his major game highlight was “hearing that bell go off at the end of the game and celebrating with [his] team.”
Steinert threw for a whopping total of 202 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and 11 completions, guiding his team to victory. As a team, Tesoro’s Varsity Football achieved a collective total of 565 yards, with three receiving touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns. “I thought I played well and did my part”, Steinert continues, “there are still things I have to work on and learn from, but I thought it was overall really good.” Reflecting on the team’s performance as a whole, Steinert recalls, “the team played really well and executed our plan to perfection.”
With spirits high, Steinert and his team look to continue their winning streak against Newport Harbor on Oct. 4. He hopes to continue this progressive momentum and make strides in Tesoro football’s offense.
