In the year 2000, the Capistrano Unified School District set out to open a new high school in what was then a largely undeveloped part of Rancho Santa Margarita. At the heart of that project was Dr. Dan Burch, a man whose vision, leadership, and dedication would give life to Tesoro High School and shape the experiences of thousands of students who proudly call themselves Titans.
Dr. Burch began the journey in a trailer on the campus of Arroyo Vista Elementary, working tirelessly to plan every detail of the new school. He influenced the architectural design, selected the red, white, and blue color scheme, and helped create the identity of Tesoro as the home of the Titans. But more than logos and buildings, Dr. Burch focused on people. He carefully recruited a team of teachers who shared his passion for excellence, many of whom still teach at Tesoro today. Names like Woodward, Harnett, Hancock, Mooney, Trotter, Thompson, Skaff, and Garrett represent a legacy of educators who continue to carry forward his vision.
When Tesoro opened its doors, Dr. Burch served as its founding principal. For thirteen years he led the school, building a culture defined by excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts. Under his leadership, Tesoro adopted the flying Titan logo and the motto “Wisdom, Strength, and Honor,” a phrase that still echoes across the gym, the stadium, and the spirit wear of students. These words were not just a slogan to Dr. Burch—they reflected his belief in character and integrity. He was known for reminding students to “Do the Right and Proper Thing,” a simple but powerful statement that guided many through their high school years.
I got to work alongside Dr. Burch as a new administrator and I remember him as being a leader who cared deeply not just about the school as a whole, but also about each individual student. He was willing to make bold decisions that shaped Tesoro’s future, but he also took the time to meet one-on-one with students, listen to their struggles, and help them find their path. His impact extended beyond academics; it was about building character and community.
Today, I have the pleasure of leading Tesoro High School as it stands as a reflection of Dr. Burch’s vision. The thriving programs in the classroom, on the stage, and on the field are a testament to his commitment to creating a place where students could achieve at the highest levels while feeling supported and cared for. I feel a profound sense of gratitude for the community he created and a responsibility to uphold the standards and caring environment he left behind.
Dr. Burch will be remembered not only as the founding principal of Tesoro High School but also as the heart of a community that continues to embody the values he instilled. His legacy lives on in the enduring spirit of the Titans.
