Recently, Tesoro’s choir department, led by Grammy-winning music teacher Keith Hancock, held its annual solo concert. Two singers, Holly Higgins and Sophia Artemov, shared their background, experiences, and reflections on their choral journey.
Holly, a freshman, values “how close everyone gets at concerts and how everyone comes together as one… it's always just so fun to be with everyone.” As to her preparation, she explained, "[it] consists of a lot of practice by myself and also with our choir director, Mr. Hancock, …[while] working hard towards doing the best I could inside and outside of school.”
Sophia, a senior and a four-year choir student, is preparing to take her final bow. When sharing about her solo preparations, she says that “the song I sang for my senior solo concert, I actually picked my freshman year.” As a freshman, she planned ahead: “I know I'm not good enough to sing it [yet], so I’m just going to…bookmark it.” As a senior, Sophia has encountered numerous setbacks; however, she emphasizes that “there is such an element of joy that comes with…singing…[and] when you get excited about something, you want to work towards it.” After reminiscing on her choral journey, her favorite memory was singing in St. Peter's Basilica during their tour in Italy during her sophomore year.
