Many students at Tesoro High School have recently begun to set aside their common backpacks, and instead opt for designer bags and retro totes instead.

Across school campuses, carrying a backpack has been a primary method of carrying books and class materials for most students. However, there is an increase in various ways for students to take their materials around campus.

One backpack replacement seen around Tesoro’s campus is designer purses to carry small materials and to manually hold larger books and notebooks. Designer purse highlights seen around Tesoro include the Coach Terry bag, Louis Vuitton armbags and Prada mini bags. In addition to smaller designer bags, larger totes and cargo purses have also made a striking appearance around school.

Tesoro sophomore, Annette Vichez, describes her tote bag preference when detailing that “I bring my tote bag everyday to school and I haven't used my backpack since.”

Vichez elaborates on her role in this fashion trend stating that “I find it a lot more comfortable, but also because I feel like it doesn’t make my outfits look awkward like a backpack would.”

Tesoro sophomore Maya Lew uses a Victoria’s Secret tote bag to carry her books and describes why she prefers it.

“I like to carry my bag because when I use my backpack all my stuff gets unorganized, but when I have a more manageable bag it's easier to keep it clean.”

Though the purse idea has struck popularity among some students, others have opposing views to the new fashion trend on campus. Tesoro sophomore, Maddie Goetschel expresses her view and how she finds it “unnecessary because some people wear really small purses which is unreasonable when having to carry all of your folders and it’s an uneven weight distribution.”

With the contrasting views that arise, the choice between participating in the purse trend or sticking to the usual backpack ultimately comes down to the students’ personal preference.
