Roses, chocolates, gifts—all in the name of love—are given and exchanged on the romantic holiday of Valentine's Day, celebrated on Feb. 14 every year.
However, the true story of this popular holiday is rarely told and not widely known. It dates all the way back to ancient Rome when there was a priest named St. Valentine, who would perform secret, illegal marriages to continue the spread of love. At that time, marriage was outlawed due to the belief that single soldiers were better warriors. He helped perform these secret ceremonies and had his own lover, to whom he would write “From your Valentine” on letters, a saying still used to this day as a part of the romantic traditions.
The history of this holiday never fails to amaze, but the real fun is how we celebrate it today. There are so many things people do on Feb. 14, different twists or date ideas, that so many love to participate in. Here are the top five things that people do on Valentine’s Day.
Of course we have to start the list by thinking about the top three date ideas that people go on with their significant other on this romantic holiday.
The first is a simple date night at a restaurant of your choosing. This can range from a candlelit dinner with flowers and romantic ambiance to a simple meal of your favorite fast food restaurant. The food doesn’t matter as long as you are with the right person!
Up next is another date idea, a movie night date. Grab a romantic movie and cuddle up on the couch! Make sure to grab some popcorn, chocolate and drinks and have a great evening!
The third date idea is to catch a sunset at the beach. Take a blanket and some food and watch the sunset while sitting on the sand. The beach is such a romantic and perfect place to watch the sunset!
Now down to the fourth thing to do on this holiday—but it's for the ones who aren’t in a relationship themselves or can’t be with their significant other on Valentine’s Day! For the girls in this situation, a great option is hosting a “Galentines”! This is a girls night so that everyone can have fun with their friends and still do something fun on Valentine’s Day. You can combine the date ideas and have fun with different foods, drinks, movies, crafts and more!
Finally, we have the same thing but for the guys who are single and didn’t ask anyone to be their Valentine- “Malentines”! This is for the guys who want to have fun with each other without thinking about romance. They can all gather together and watch sports and play games while having such a fun time!
No matter how you celebrate, Valentine's Day is such a wonderful and magical holiday for everyone, beginning so long ago, to people both with, and without significant others. Everyone can get together and have fun to celebrate romance or even just friendship. This Valentine’s Day, everyone should try out one of the above top five things to do!
