Dr. Daniel James Burch, the founding principal of Tesoro High School, passed away on Monday, Aug. 11, 2025, peacefully at home. His contributions to education and the community are immeasurable.
Dr. Burch graduated from UC Los Angeles with a degree in mathematics. He later pursued a doctorate in education at Pepperdine University. His journey in education began in 1975 when he taught math and coached soccer at San Clemente High School.
Early Career and Growth
In 1981, Dr. Burch became the Activities Director at Dana Hills High School. This role allowed him to develop leadership skills and engage with students in various activities. His passion for education and student development was evident from the start.
In 1990, he transitioned to the role of principal. His first principal position was at Murrieta Mesa High School, where he played a pivotal role in opening the school. Following this, he moved to Villa Park High School and then to Capistrano Valley High School. Each position allowed him to leave a lasting impact on the schools and their communities.
Founding Tesoro High School
Dr. Burch's most significant achievement came when he opened Tesoro High School. He served as principal for 13 years, during which he established a strong foundation for the school. His mantra, “Wisdom, Strength, and Honor,” continues to resonate within the campus community today.
He was known for his unwavering commitment to guiding students and staff. He often advised them to “Do the Right and Proper Thing.” This philosophy shaped the culture at Tesoro and inspired countless individuals.
