Dr. Daniel James Burch, the founding principal of Tesoro High School, passed away on Monday, Aug. 11, 2025, peacefully at home.

He graduated from UC Los Angeles with a mathematics degree before pursuing a doctorate in education at Pepperdine University. In 1975, he started his career by teaching math and coaching soccer at San Clemente High School. Six years later, he became the Activities Director at Dana Hills High School.

In 1990, he transitioned to the role of principal. First, he went to Murrieta Mesa High School, opening the school. Later, he moved to Villa Park High School, then Capistrano Valley High School. Finally, he got his last principal role, opening Tesoro High School.

There, he served as principal for 13 years. At Tesoro, Dr. Burch created the mantra “Wisdom, Strength, and Honor,” which is still relevant and communicated today on campus. In addition, he was known for advising students and staff to “Do the Right and Proper Thing”.

After temporarily retiring, he took on interim roles in San Diego County before working with WASC to accredit schools.
