With the fall season for high school sports ending, winter sports are preparing to assume their place. This winter, Tesoro is expected to excel in basketball - both boys and girls.
The boys varsity basketball team at Tesoro has found immense success in the past few years, finishing as South Coast League Champions in 2019, 2020, and 2022. With the guidance of Varsity Head Coach Steven Garrett and Varsity Assistant Coach Josh Parks, they led a successful season last year, becoming league champions yet ultimately falling short in the second round of CIF to La Mirada.
The Girl's Varsity Basketball team has consistently ranked top three in the South Coast League. Led by Varsity Head Coach Jim Arneson, they placed second in their respective league and unfortunately lost in their first round of CIF to Sage Hill.
Both teams exhibit enormous potential from their performances last year and are sure to put up a fierce fight to be league champions this season, and perhaps even further. The staff and team will look very similar to last years, but now with more experience.
For Boys Varsity Basketball, Coach Steven Garrett is returning for his 22nd consecutive year as the Varsity Basketball Head Coach, with Coach Josh Parks as Assistant Coach. Only one member of the successful 2022 team graduated, and all five starters return.
According to Adam Mattson, a Junior on the Varsity team, the team captains will be Senior Blake Manning, whose role is to "run the offense efficiently," and Senior Carson Brown, who "is the leading scorer for the team and also a great defender."
Adam Mattson also notes that this year's team is "very experienced and versatile," and he is "looking forward to playing some competitive games" and continuing to "grow as a team and [a] family." There is no shortage of chemistry throughout the team, developing a tightly-knit atmosphere which is paramount to a successful team.
For Girls Varsity Basketball, Coach Jim Arneson is returning for his 12th consecutive year as the Varsity Basketball Head Coach. Some notable returning Seniors, Guard Lara Prasad, Forward Celine Castaneda, and Forward Avery Steinhardt, were critical to the success of last year's team, managing to average an astounding 55.6 points per game.
“I am looking forward to seeing how we can develop over the whole season as a team,” says junior point guard Kiki Zeppos.
With ample talent and momentum carrying over to the 22-23 season, our Titans basketball teams are bound for new heights.
