Tesoro Mock Trial Makes It to Playoffs

Tesoro Blue team at the Santa Ana Courthouse after competing against El Dorado Hawk

Tesoro’s Mock Trial team won their match against El Dorado High’s Hawk team at the CRF-OC competition at the Santa Ana Courthouse on Tuesday, Dec. 5. After months of preparation during the weekdays and weekends, Tesoro’s advanced team (Tesoro Blue) made it to the playoffs after six rounds of competing amongst 46 other Mock Trial teams in Orange County. Now with only four teams left, the stakes for each competition are high.

The mock trial case centers around the production of a prosthetic limb with Tobie Clark charged with first-degree murder of his colleague Kieran Sunshine after lying to the board about the results of the product.

Senior Ryan Nguyen serves as one of the captains of the team and one of the attorneys. He received Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the competition. The MVP award goes to two students of opposing teams that displayed admirable performance.

“Initially, I joined mock trial because I was a sixth grader with too much time on my hands…. Although it is a large time commitment, I realized that I really enjoy the competition, the environment and the people, so I decided to stick with it,” said Nguyen.

The team’s next competition round will be Thursday, Jan. 18.
