Tesoro Football Joins Bravo League

For the first time ever, the Tesoro Titans will be competing in the Bravo league. Welcome to the new era of Tesoro football. Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

The South Coast League is no longer in Orange County football. The longtime historic football league based on the largest, most successful South Orange County public high schools is being replaced with an equity-based model starting in 2024.

A desire to have more fair leagues throughout all of Orange County football has led to a new, more fluid way of determining league membership. From now on, leagues will be based on competitive equity.

The leagues will be formed yearly, based on projections and past performances, to try and cluster high schools with other similarly-skilled teams, regardless of the highschool’s proximity. The new leagues are meant to create more fair match-ups between teams, making games more interesting to watch while creating a competitive environment and making it possible for any team to win each league.

Not only have the league compositions changed, so has the naming of the 12 new leagues. The highest ranked league will be called the Alpha League, followed by the Bravo League. Next in line is the Delta League and so on. Tesoro will be part of the Bravo League. League members include San Juan Hills, Newport Harbor, Corona Del Mar, Villa Park and Yorba Linda.

When Tesoro’s special teams and defensive back coach, Ernie Bucher, was asked about the opportunity of entering a new league without the powerhouse programs they played in the past, he had this to say: “[e]very team in the league is very good, very accomplished. It’s just as much of a challenge as it was before…you’re dealing with the top 12 teams in Orange County.” Bucher was excited about the new league, stating, “[e]very game you could win and every game you could lose.”

Tesoro entered league play with a record of 3-2, beating Murrieta Mesa, La Mirada and Cypress but losing to San Marcos and La Serna.

Additionally, Tesoro took its third loss to a tight game against Newport Harbor last week in the first ever Bravo league matchup, losing 31-34.

Junior Captain Wyatt Owens (MLB) was frustrated with the loss, stating, “[t]he loss against Newport really stung but it's a big league. Anyone can beat `any team. It will be tough but I feel confident in our guys to pull out these last couple games.” Fortunately, since it is a six team league, this loss doesn’t eliminate Tesoro’s chances of winning the league.

In Tesoro’s next home game, they take on the Mustangs of Yorba Linda, on Oct. 18, in a pink-out themed game for Breast Cancer Awareness month, while also recognizing Best Buddies and Future Titan Night. And on Oct. 25, Tesoro plays Corona Del Mar.

The much anticipated Battle of the Bell game against San Juan Hills takes place Nov. 1, where the Titans look to take back the sacred bell in a home red-out themed game.

With Tesoro’s first year in the new league and Tesoro’s coach, Mike Zangl, as head coach, the Titans are looking forward to capturing their first league title in over 15 years and having a memorable season.
